33 iTunes and Line scams reported in Singapore in a month

The Singapore Police reported today (October 8) that it received 33 cases of scams involving the chat app Line and iTunes gift cards in September.

The fraudsters work the same way in each incident: they gain access to a Line account, pose as the user, and send messages to the victim’s friends asking them to purchase iTunes gift cards. They would then request for a photo of the redemption codes to be sent over. The Line account password would be changed.

Luckily, not all Line users fell for the trick. One Microsoft staff posted his hilarious conversation with a Line hacker online.

Singapore Line users are not the only ones targeted by the scammers. These hacks also common in Japan, the app’s country of origin. Line issued a statement in response to these incidents, saying that the app itself isn’t compromised, but rather user accounts were.
