12 crypto apps that pay you to walk

There is no lack of move-to-earn (M2E) crypto apps on the market today. They cater to everyone from the hardcore crypto traders to the casual runner who just wants to earn cash on the side.

Many of these apps have been developed by legitimate companies that have partnered with well-known brands, though some were created by more nascent businesses.

But even when dealing with an established brand, crypto investors should remember there is no guarantee that they will ever see a return on any money they put in.

Here are the 12 M2E apps that are worth checking out. Also, should you want to stay on top of Asia’s vibrant tech scene, you can get a Tech in Asia subscription to receive our full editorial coverage.

1. Stepn

AppleApp Store/Google Play Store

Stepn is one of the largest apps that pays people to walk, run, and jog, with over 800,000 daily users. Players buy non-fungible tokens (NFT) in the form of sneakers from Stepn marketplaces, equip them in the app, and start moving to earn tokens that can be sold or used to upgrade their sneakers. Each NFT only gives about 10 minutes of playing time, but users can buy additional NFTs to increase how long they can play.

Stepn was developed by Find Satoshi Lab, an Australian company, which has raised US$5 million from investors. Its in-game currency is called Green Satoshi Tokens, while its governance token is dubbed Green Metaverse Token. The company is a strong backer of environmental issues, particularly carbon removal.

Stepn is currently rolling out new updates every few weeks and plans to launch a multichain marketplace, an achievement system, and an online marathon this year.

2. Genopets

App not currently available

Genopets is still in the beta phase, but the concept is simple: It’s Pokemon Go-meets-crypto. Players buy Genopets, which can be developed and upgraded by completing challenges and fighting other Genopets. Players then use augmented reality to find tokens and other users, which essentially means they get paid to walk. Future updates will include PVE adventures, PVP battles, and a team mode. Genopets is built on the Solana blockchain.

5. Dustland Runner
