Yahoo! Innovates Digital Advertising

In the city of San Fransisco, Yahoo! has come up with an innovative way to advertise.

Realising that commuters waiting at bus stops are usually bored waiting for buses that never seem to arrive, they installed 20 interactive screens at Yahoo! themed bus stops around the neighbourhoods in San Fran.

Hit the jump for the next advance in advertising. Isn’t that the coolest idea ever? If only we had something like that at our own bus stop.

Dubbed the Bus Stop Derby, it pits the 20 neighbourhoods against each other in 4 different games, ranging from sports trivia to picture sorting. Commuters at one bus stop can challenge a fellow commuter at a different bus stop in real time. At the end of 2 months, the neighbourhood with the highest score will be treated to a block party by OK Go. In this campaign, Yahoo! brands such as Flickr are sneaked into the mix nicely.

The value of a new idea like this cannot be understated. Not only is it refreshing, I predict it will usher in a number of imitators, looking to cash in on the viability of this innovation. I can see ads on the Internet effortlessly being replicated on this digital medium.

At the same time, kudos to Yahoo! and their agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, who were willing to brave new waters with this. It will take a lot to overhaul Google, but this is a step in the right direction. At least in advertising terms.
