Xiaomi launched its Mi Max 2 tablet phone today in Delhi, India. This is the biggest phone Xiaomi has ever created. It is 7.6 mm thick and has a 6.44 inch display and 5300 mAh battery which will last through 57 hours of talktime, says the company. It is priced at INR 16,999 (US$264).

Among large-screen phones, the Samsung Galaxy S8, launched in April with 6.2 inch display and 4 GB RAM, has a price tag more than three times the Xiaomi Mi Max 2. The Oppo F3 Plus with 6 inch display and 4 GB RAM is priced two times higher than the Mi Max 2.

The Mi Max 2 comes with parallel charging that will help users get to 68 percent battery life in 1 hour of charging.

Here are the key specs:

  • 5300 mAh battery with 2 days’ life
  • 4GB RAM, 64GB/128GB internal storage
  • Quick Charge 3.0 and parallel charging, which charges 68 percent of the battery in an hour
  • 6.44 inch display
  • Sony IMX386 camera with a large 1.25μm sensor for low light photography
  • Android 7.1.1 Nougat
  • Rear fingerprint sensor
  • 2.5D curved glass
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • Full metal body
  • Split screen feature available
  • Discreet antennae

Xiaomi is also partnering with Reliance Jio to offer 100 GB data free for all Mi Max 2 users. They can claim an additional 100 GB every time they recharge their phone for over INR 399.

Chinese smartphones have caught the eye of Indian consumers, with Xiaomi leading the pack. This has contributed to Xiaomi’s return to a high growth path, with 23.2 million phones sold in the April-June quarter this year.

The Mi Max 2 will initially be available on ecommerce sites Flipkart and Amazon. Offline retail sales will follow soon. Xiaomi recently opened its own Mi Home outlets in India.

The Mi Max 2 was launched earlier in Malaysia, besides its home market China. But India holds the key to expansion for the Chinese smartphone maker, with 328 percent growth in the first half of 2017, according to Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain, who spoke at the launch event today. Xiaomi is the number 2 smartphone brand in India after Samsung.
