Go-Jek’s critical numbers leaked. Here’s its response.

Gossips have been flying around lately about Southeast Asia’s transportation apps, some of which sound outrageous and are impossible to verify. We were first told rumors about Grab, but the company denied them. Then came a leaked investor presentation from Indonesian bike-hailing app Go-Jek, which shows the company’s completed bookings and gross booking fare values since last year.

So here’s the breakdown: Go-Jek’s monthly completed orders grew rapidly from March to October 2015, an increase of 98 times.

However, its growth slowed dramatically from October 2015 to March 2016, growing just 12 percent. In January 2016, it completed 340,000 bookings a day on average.

We reached out to Go-Jek for comment, who noted that the leaked numbers are for March 2016 and earlier. It added that in Q2 2016, its monthly completed orders grew over 60 percent with no increase in subsidies.

However, it declined to comment when asked whether the 60 percent growth meant that its average monthly completed orders in Q2 rose by that amount over Q1.

“There were over 20 million bookings on our platform in June 2016, meaning that we are processing roughly eight bookings per second just last month,” Go-Jek said in a statement. That’s about 667,000 rides per day.

It also noted that while growth in the latter months of 2015 slowed, it still grew 900 times in monthly completed orders within the year.

Go-Jek attributes its Q2 growth to its increasing focus outside of Jakarta, as well as new services like Go-Car, its car hailing service, Go-Kilat, its package delivery service, and Go-Pay, its mobile wallet. It declined to break down its completed orders by the various services.

The company adds that its partnership with Indonesia’s largest taxi company Blue Bird will go live in Q3, although it didn’t give details on how the collaboration will look like.

The company also pointed out that according to app analytics firm App Annie, Go-Jek has twice the downloads over Grab. It claims that Go-Food has delivered 15 million meals since it was started.

Our own check with App Annie, however, shows that Go-Jek and Grab are the top two most downloaded transportation apps on Android in Indonesia in recent months. About a month ago, Grab surpassed Go-Jek in the app store rankings.
