ChinaJoy 2014, China’s largest gaming conference, came to an end yesterday. Visitors were treated to gaming, cosplay, and of course, tons of show girls. While that would normally mean a very good day for the pre-dominantly male audience, this year Duowan made a few comparisons to another highly-popular convention which also just ended recently: the San Diego Comic-Con International. Long story short: sex still sells, but not as much as before.

Although ChinaJoy focuses on gaming and Comic-Con on comics, both events attract a similar audience (anime and gaming enthusiasts), both bring in a large number of cosplayers, and both are meant to be entertaining. But after looking closer and making a visual comparison, like Duowan did below, there are some very obvious differences between the two—differences which have Chinese gamers thinking, “Why can’t ChinaJoy be like that?”

Sex sells, especially in China. However with more and more people referring to ChinaJoy as 拆奶罩 (chai nai zhao), which means to tear open one’s bra, will we possibly see ChinaJoy doing things in a more Western way and becoming a less cleavage-focused event? Probably not.
