Fablic, the maker of women-focused flea-market app Fril, raises $9M

Nikkei is reporting that Fablic netted JPY 1 billion (US$9.15 million) in its latest funding round (h/t to The Bridge). Cookpad, Colopl, and Jafco led the funding.
Fablic, which was included in our list of the top online shopping options in Japan is best known for its app Fril that allows users to buy and sell clothes in an online flea market. According to Nikkei, the app has approximately 1.9 million downloads.
Fablic’s windfall is reminiscent of Mercari’s US$14 million funding back in March. Both services are flea markets primarily used by women, though Fablic’s users are almost exclusively younger women in high-school and college.
Fablic is a homegrown story, having first come out of Open Network Lab’s accelerator program in 2012. Its days as a Japan-only product might be numbered, however. Mercari’s first move after getting its new cash? Opening an office in America.
