WhatsApp rolls out shopping button for business accounts

“WhatsApp has launched a new shopping button on its app that will allow users to browse through a business’ catalog,” The Business Standard reported.

The feature allows WhatsApp users to access companies’ storefronts from the app. There will now be an icon next to an official WhatsApp business account that will open up their menu, helping boost visibility.

“This will make it easier for businesses to have their products discovered which can help increase sales,” WhatsApp said. The new shopping icon, which replaces the voice call button, has been launched worldwide.

Last week, the Facebook-owned messaging app also announced that it won approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to roll out its payments service across the country. The new feature allows people to send money to other users or share the cost of goods through the app itself.

It was designed using the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), an Indian real-time payment system, allowing its users to send money to anyone using a UPI-supported app. The NPCI said its approval was given on the multi-bank model.

“WhatsApp can expand its UPI user base in a graded manner starting with a maximum registered user base of 20 million in UPI,” an NPCI statement read.
