Flickr is one of the largest photo sharing community; a site for you to store your pictures online and share them with your friends. It claims to have hosted more than 3.6 billion images in June 2009, a drastic increment compared to its 3 billion figure in 2008. Presently, Flickr’s main competitor is Photobucket.
Short Profile
Flickr was launched in February 2004 and is created by Ludicorp, a Vancouver, British Columbia-based company. It was initially created as a tool for Ludicorp’s online web based game, Neverending. However, Flickr by itself proved to be a more viable business idea and Neverending was hence put to a halt.
In March 2005, Yahoo acquired Flickr for $35 million.
What’s Special
Having thousands of unorganized pictures on your computer can be a pain. Flickr enables you to store them online and best of all, share them with the world. With Flickr, you can edit your images: remove red eye, adjust exposure, color and their sizes and “make stuff” with them.
You can view pictures taken in different parts of the world. This option can be found in “Explore”, drop list “World Map”. As you gain fresh perspectives from the images, you are offered a very different experience regardless if you are browsing for inspiration or for leisure.
Last but not least, Flickr greets you with different languages. Something that I personally find really interesting.
