For the first time, Dota 2 actually gets an update before Warcraft 3 (WC3) DotA. But of course, that doesn’t mean WC3 DotA isn’t going to get one at all. In fact, IceFrog has already released a 6.79 test map for WC3 DotA. The beta testing for it is open to the public and may be found in the PlayDotA forums. As always, players are encouraged to report bugs and issues for the 6.79 map. This map also features changes for the unreleased heroes in Dota 2, namely Earth Spirit, Ember Spirit, Legion Commander, Oracle, Phoenix, and Terrorblade.
One big thing people are keeping an eye on this patch is the 6.79 alternate reality game (ARG), which is an in-game event triggered by certain instances or conditions. These conditions are kept secret, and players can only figure out by unraveling a series of real-world clues. In Dota, it is an occurrence for every x.x9 map. In a Twitter post made by Matthew “Cyborgmatt” Bailey about ARG on Dota 2, he says:
Despite this post, people continue to speculate about the presence of ARG in the 6.79 patch for both WC3 DotA and Dota 2. Still, there’s always a chance that there is no ARG for this map, and I can only hope the community doesn’t end up throwing another tantrum like when they didn’t get Diretide this year.
