Yesterday morning, Weibo reports indicated that a possible explosion caused a fire in Foxconn’s Yantai plant in Shandong, China. Details are scarce, but netizens reported fire trucks racing to the scene and giant clouds of smoke visible from miles away, as evidenced in the photo at right.
The smoke apparently started at around 10:30 AM, appearing rather suddenly, and some Weibo users in the area reported hearing what sounded like a series of small explosions after the smoke began. Flames were also occasionally visible, but the fires seemed to be under some control by 11 or so.
The cause of the blaze is not yet clear, nor is it clear whether or not anyone was injured in the blaze. The Yantai factory manufactures everything from desktops and notebooks to printers, so it’s also unclear if the production of any gadgets will be affected.
It’s more bad news for a manufacturer that’s constantly in the news for negative things, from suicides to their plans to replace millions of workers with robots. Most recently, the manufacturer of Apple devices and other tech gadgets has been in the news for a brutal stabbing that left one worker dead at its Guanlan factory and an accidental death when a female worker fell out a window at a Zhengzhou Foxconn complex.
