Apple has urged its suppliers to move their production hubs for AirPods and Beats earphones to India, Nikkei Asia reported.
The move was likely made due to the ill relations that the US has with the tech giant’s current core manufacturing capital, China. This comes on top of the East Asian powerhouse’s restrictive zero-Covid policy.
Major suppliers Foxconn and Luxshare Precision Industry have expressed their support, the report noted. The former has already looked into assembling Beats headphones in India and will soon produce AirPods in the country.
Luxshare, which operates in China and Vietnam, also agreed to help Apple with its AirPods production in India in the future. However, the manufacturer mentioned that it will focus on its Vietnam operations in the meantime.
Within the past few years, tensions have risen between the US and China, leading Apple to open production facilities for its AirPods and Beats headphones in Vietnam.
India is aiming to become a large player in the global electronics supply chain, earmarking US$30 billion to make this happen.
