Asian fusion: How GrabFood, Foodpanda have reshaped the business of food in Southeast Asia
In Southeast Asia, more and more people are opting to order in than dine out.
According to the latest joint research by Google and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings, the region’s online food delivery market has achieved a gross merchandise volume (GMV) of US$5.2 billion in 2019, powered by “everyday apps” like Grab as well as pure-play delivery businesses. That number is projected to further surge to US$20 billion by 2025, although there’s indication that actual figures may well exceed that.
Here’s how online food delivery has changed the way we enjoy our meals in Southeast Asia.

As restaurant operations continue to evolve and the cloud kitchen model develops and matures further, consumers can expect the experience to keep improving, whether that means even faster delivery times, food choices, or a better app user experience. The Southeast Asia online food delivery market projects to keep experiencing strong growth, and looks set to play a key role in the region’s continuing economic progress.
