Thanks to Facebook, Speed Town is now Speedkills

Since years, big road safety advertising campaigns conducted by the government were unsuccessful. Thanks to Facebook and a tiny little town in Australia called “Speed” with just 45 in population are changing the way road safety campaign is being done.

As a part of the Facebook campaign, the town called “Speed” will be renamed to “Speedkills” for the month of March. Confused? Here is how everything started:

The idea of this campaign was proposed by the state’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC). They approached the residents of “Speed” with a proposal that if they were to get 10,000 Facebook users to ‘like’ the “Rename Speed” fan page, the Town will be renamed to Speedkills for a month. On top of that, TAC will donate $10,000 to their local Lions Club. Well, Facebook never fails to surprise us. There are currently more than 34,000 people liking the page and giving their support to the campaign.

The people of Speed are hoping that their unique contribution to road safety will make drivers hit the brakes. In fact, a Speed’s resident named “Phil Down” changed his name to “Phil Slow Down” for a month to join the campaign.

He said, “It’s virtually on the road to somewhere else, so we’ve taken our quirky name and run with it to bring the attention to the campaign of trying to get people to slow down on country roads and especially through small towns.”
