Twitter Trending in Japan

We’re witnessing key Asian markets dominated by Facebook or Twitter. In India, Facebook overthrew Orkut to claim the number one spot. comScore data now suggests that Twitter is on its way to overthrow Mixi as Japan’s most visited social site.

In Japan, Twitter enjoyed a 428 percent robust year-to-year growth to reach 13.2 million visitors. The micro-blogging site currently sits at the number two spot, behind Mixi, which saw 13.5 million visitors last month. Facebook’s growth is modest as it experienced a 78 percent year-to-year growth to reach 5.3 million unique visitors in September 2010.

Visitor Growth to Mixi, Twitter and Facebook in Japan

The chart suggests a trend. If everything remains status quo, Twitter is expected to leapfrog Mixi to claim the number one spot. In fact, back in June, Nielsen’s data already reflected that Twitter was number one. The measurement, I believe, is based on number of users. It doesn’t matter which metrics should be taken to measure popularity. Twitter won in both anyway (soon, at least). Clearly, Twitter’s strategy in Japan is paying off handsomely.

With more Japanese users, we should expect to see more Japanese-based viral campaign on Twitter. Japan’s largest casual wear retailer, Uniqlo, did the latest campaign.
