Images of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant have been posted over on Fallout 3 Nexus. The user who posted them appears to be Japanese, as his brief explanation is in broken English and he links to Japanese news articles about the Fukushima situation. He says “This is not to mock the earthquake has not made,” ostensibly saying that he doesn’t mean to make fun of the tragic situation.
According to Kotaku, reactions to the posted images online have been mixed. This is not surprising. Gaming has always been a medium for telling stories, but in recent years the visuals are coming so close to reality that they can strike a nerve sometimes.
While on one hand gaming is a legitimate visual art, but it’s also an environment or platform created for play. And perhaps it’s that association with playing that makes people take offense here.
The images aren’t exactly a true-to-life representation of the plant, but speaking personally, I think that the feelings that they evoke are appropriately sombre. Having said that, I don’t think I could ever enjoy ‘playing’ in such an environment.
Lively anti-nuke protest
On a related note, there was an anti-nuclear protest held in Tokyo yesterday. I was there in person and captured this video of a few of the more… umm… colorful protestors. Apologies for the shaky camera, but these guys were on the back of a moving truck and it was hard to keep up in the crowd. Warning, this gets a little loud and rowdy.
