Hi there,

As Shopee climbed to the top of Southeast Asia’s ecommerce heap over the past few years, many local players are struggling to catch up. Regional giants like Shopee and Lazada typically have much larger scale and resources compared to the likes of Sendo, Tiki, or Qoo10, which all operate only in their home markets.

However, there is one local contender that has competed fiercely with the region’s titans: Indonesia’s Tokopedia. By several metrics, it is currently neck and neck with Shopee as they vie for first place in Southeast Asia’s largest market.

Why does Tokopedia seem to be an exception? What factors let it go head to head with major players in a way that similar ecommerce businesses in other countries are unable to do? In this week’s premium story, we find out why that’s the case.
