Well, that was fast. On Titanfall‘s first day of closed beta, the servers were up and running for several hours, long enough for us to post our in-depth impressions and a bunch of videos. But early in the morning, as Americans got home from work/school, the servers apparently got flooded and Titanfall has gone down.
The screen you see above is what I’m getting when I try to play the game right now, and judging from the online response so far it’s pretty clear that I’m not alone.
Titanfall is running on Windows Azure dedicated servers, and according to the devs, the issue we’re experiencing right now is a bug rather than a hard limit on the number of people who can play the game. Microsoft is “working on it.”
This is obviously disappointing news for those who were hoping to spend their Valentines Day evening playing the beta, but in a sense we should probably be grateful. EA has a history of launching games (SimCity, Battlefield) that run into massive server problems at launch because of an apparent lack of preparation. The Titanfall beta going down now could be a blessing in disguise if it means that EA and Microsoft get their act together so that this doesn’t happen to customers who’ve paid for the game on launch day.
UPDATE: It also seems that EA sent out codes for the wrong platform to lots of beta applicants, so users who signed up for the PC beta got Xbox One codes in their email this afternoon. (In fact, this happened to some Games in Asia staff).
