TikTok boss to appear before US lawmakers as app ban looms

Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, is scheduled to testify before US lawmakes as the Chinese short-video app faces continued scrutiny in the country over data privacy concerns, Reuters reported.

He will appear before the US Energy and Commerce Committee on March 23, after the House Committee on Foreign Affairs’ planned vote on a bill that would prohibit TikTok in the country. According to the report, the app has over 100 million users in the US.

The ByteDance-operated company has “knowingly allowed” the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to gain access to the data of American users, said Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who chairs the energy and commerce panel.

A spokesperson for TikTok told Reuters that the company welcomes the chance to speak and “set the record straight” on its privacy policies. The company also added that the CCP had no control whatsoever on both ByteDance and TikTok.

In January 2021, India blocked TikTok as tensions between the country and China continued to rise after a border clash in 2020. Other apps affected by the ban include AliExpress, Taobao Live, Baidu, and Alipay.
