I have always been interested in Chinese history. Perhaps that’s why I find so many Chinese games frustrating; they take place during real historical periods, but somehow everyone’s a kung-fu expert and there are fairies and dragons flying around everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I like dragons too, but sometimes it’s better to let history be history, and it seems like that’s exactly what’s happening in the upcoming Tiger Knight (虎豹骑), an upcoming Chinese third-person action/RPG that’s set in the Three Kingdoms period and focused on cavalry warfare.
The first trailer for the game has just been released, and it’s pretty awesome. It features some very cool looking animated classical Chinese art, but the snippets of the gameplay — in which you can see massive, chaotic cavalry battles — are what really captured my attention. The game runs on the Unreal 3 engine, and I can’t wait to see it in its full glory.
Although cavalry obviously plays a central role, the armies of the game will also feature infantry soldiers and archers, just like the real armies of the time did. Training and developing your armies and coming up with a successful strategy will be crucial if you want to win battles. It all sounds very cool, and fairly historically accurate.
The game is being developed by TQ Digital, which has been around for quite a while and even won a few awards for its work on previous games. But with no beta date, release date, or even an official website yet, it may still be a while before we’re galloping across China’s countryside on horseback with the wind in our hair and ten thousand soldiers at our back, ready to unite the land under one banner. Still, this is definitely one we’ll be keeping an eye on!
