Brief: Japanese billionaire Taizo Son moves to Singapore, plans $100m for SEA startups

  • Taizo Son, the younger brother of SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, has relocated from Tokyo to Singapore and plans to invest US$100 million in Southeast Asian startups.
  • Taizo, like his brother, is also a tech billionaire. He made his fortune as the founder of gaming company GungHo.
  • He is reportedly moving to Singapore out of frustration with Japan’s strict regulatory environment and outdated education system.
  • Among Taizo’s existing investments is Garena – Southeast Asia’s most valuable tech company. He backed Garena through his part-VC, part incubator firm Mistletoe last year.
