The Demacia Cup, China's $120,000 LoL tournament, starts today

If you’re a fan of Chinese League of Legends, you probably know about China’s ongoing professional league, the LPL. But you might be less clear on the Demacia Cup, a separate tournament in China that’s kicking off today and that boasts RMB 720,000 ($118,000) in prize money.

This year’s Demacia Cup has been greatly expanded from the previous tournament by that name, which included just eight teams and took place over just a few days. But new version of the tournament kicking off today includes 28 teams (including all LPL and LSPL teams and four amateur teams) and will run on and off over the course of six months. Unlike the regular LPL, which includes a regular season and playoffs, the Demacia Cup is a bracketed elimination tournament: if you lose, you’re out.

In other words—if you can forgive a “regular sports” analogy—it’s a bit like the FA Cup: a separate elimination tournament with a broader base of teams that will be played concurrently with the seasons of the top flight professional leagues.

Sounds pretty cool, right? Well, the good news is that just like we cast the LPL in English, we’ll also be shoutcasting the Demacia Cup live in English on our stream. That includes today’s match between Star Horn (formerly Royal Club) and Young Glory, a newly-promoted LPL team.
