India’s Glamrs raises $940k to grow beauty video site

Mumbai-based Newgen Internet Networks has raised close to US$940,000 in a pre-series A funding round led by Ventureworks India. The company owns an online beauty video portal called Glamrs.
The site explores various genres for women like beauty, health, nutrition, and style and offers engaging content in the form of quick videos. It was founded in 2012 by angel investor Sadarangani, Zubin Sarkari, and Shanel Chellaram. Sardarangani was also the founding angel investor of online travel agency Cleartrip.com and Bangalore-based digital CRM firm Vizury.
“The money would be used for scaling up the company’s content team, building key data analytics, and strengthen the technology and mobile platform for videos,” says Naveen Sadarangani, co-founder and managing director, Glamrs, in a statement. The funding was led by VentureWorks India, along with Blume Ventures, Batlivala & Karani Securities, and Nikunj Jhaveri – founder, System Plus Group of companies.
With this funding, Keshav Sanghi, founder of VentureWorks India and former managing director of Goldman Sachs India, earns a spot on Newgen’s board.
Be Beautiful is another such online beauty and fashion portal, but unlike Glamrs, it provides a platform for write-ups rather than videos.
