Leading Indonesian insurance company, PT Asuransi Sinarmas, now provides a a remarkably cheap insurance program for local mobile phone consumers. The offer is available to those who buy at Global Teleshop, one of the largest telecommunication retailers in Indonesia. The insurance, which costs a mere $3, applies to owners of BlackBerry, Samsung, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Apple, and LG mobile phones worth a minimum of IDR 1 million (US$118).
The insurance premium will be valid for six months from the time of purchase, and damaged phones can be repaired or Teleshop will replace it with new one. The retailer considers this period consistent with the behavior of mobile consumers in Indonesia who love to switch phones in a very short time span.
It important to note that that mobile users in Indonesia are mostly teenagers who love to follow new mobile designs, features, or brands. But they are also prone to being more careless than adult consumers, so handsets are often dropped or damaged, causing a high level of phone turnover.
“This insurance program we launched provides education regarding the use of mobile phones as well as added value on the sales of communication products in our stores,”said the president director of Global Teleshop, Evy Soenarjo. This insurance program is valid at 250 Teleshop outlets across Indonesia, and is expected to reach 80 percent of all consumers.
Many mobile phone vendors in Indonesia also encourage consumers to change mobile phones quickly, with new models coming out at a fast and furious pace. Consumers can choose from more affordable local phone vendors or renowned smart phone brands that cost a little more. This new insurance program should help consumers take care of their handsets a little longer, regardless of which type they choose.
