Over on Tencent’s developer website, the Chinese Internet giant has launched its own version of Facebook Connect.
It’s called QQ login. Using the service, third party websites can now tap on Tencent’s 637 million QQ users.
Besides reducing the hassle for registration, QQ login also allows users to share comments on third party websites and connect with friends. Users have the option to share these comments to Qzone which is Tencent’s social network. You get the drift, as the idea is similar to Facebook Connect.
With more than 600 million users (mostly in China), it makes a lot of sense for Chinese websites to adopt QQ Login. But it probably wouldn’t scale abroad because of its lack of international users.
Tencent has been extremely busy of late. Most notably, it partnered with Groupon to set up Gaopeng.com, and with Intel to set up a research center. Tencent has also build a new data center which is twice the size of Apple’s data center in North Carolina.
