Tencent’s Open Source QQ Mobile Browser

9.43am: Alan Chen, Senior Director Of Wireless R&D Dept at Tencent talked about the mobile browser industry. He noted that mobile devices are becoming smaller and also increasing in mobility. While hardware enjoys growth, mobile internet connection isn’t as stable and reliable as it should be. Likewise for using the mobile devices to surf the Internet: It isn’t as quick and convenient in China. Tencent wants to solve the problem by improving its QQ mobile browser for better user experience, at least on the software side.

9.50am: Chen shared a iResearch chart to show that gossip news, social networking and messaging are the most common PC Internet activities in China. He pulled out another graph and explained that mobile internet usage behavior is more or less the same. However, Chen explained that the strong growth of mobile industry would change how users interact with mobile devices for internet activities. The mobile industry would evolve, which he coined it as a “2.0 users’ need.” He says that content aggregation, personalization, user experience and stability would be some improvements which we can all expect in time to come.

9.56am: Software and hardware integration between companies would be an important factor to make “2.0 users’ need” a reality. Chen said that this requires an open source mobile platform to allow leverage on everyone’s wisdom. On that, Tencent would not only provide  an open source mobile platform but also open source location-based and flash capabilities. Chen gave an example on its flash enabled technology, a flash based game played through the QQ mobile browser. He noted that there isn’t many flash-enabled mobile platforms and hope that Tencent’s QQ mobile browser can provide developers with opportunities to create flash-related web applications.

10.00am: However, Chen did say that different hardware partners have different strengths but Tencent is willing to work hand-in-hand with them to create the best experience for end users. All in all, Chen explained that Tencent hopes to help non-mobile-internet users to embrace the internet by providing a simple-to-use mobile browser interface.
