Tencent forms team for own ChatGPT competitor

Tencent now has a team dedicated to creating a generative AI chatbot, Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The product, speculated to be called HunyuanAide, will use Tencent’s own AI model, which had previously scored better than humans on a Chinese language understanding test.

Tencent’s move comes amid a global surge in interest in generative AI. One of the most popular examples of this is ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

However, ChatGPT is not accessible to users in China. This has created an opportunity for Chinese tech companies to develop their own chatbots for both domestic and international markets.

According to Grand View Research, the global chatbot market size was valued at US$525.7 million in 2021 and is predicted to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 25.7% through 2030.

Other Chinese tech giants such as Alibaba and Baidu have also announced plans to launch their own generative AI chatbot products.
