Tencent earns $1.8 billion from online games in Q2

Chinese tech giant Tencent recently released its Q2 2014 unaudited financial results—you can read more about the overall results on Tech in Asia—and as usual, the company’s gaming division has had an excellent quarter. Tencent reports it earned more than RMB 11 billion ($1.8 billion) in revenue from online gaming this past quarter, representing growth of 7% compared to the previous quarter, and 47.5% growth year-on-year.

If that RMB 11 billion in gaming revenues, about RMB 3 billion (nearly $500 million) came from Tencent’s mobile gaming platforms (QQ and WeChat), with the rest coming from PC games. That means that in Q2, mobile games accounted for about 27% of Tencent’s overall revenue from online games.

More impressively, Tencent’s online gaming revenue accounts for more than half of the company’s overall $3.2 billion in revenues in the quarter. Here’s a chart (via Chinese gaming site 17173) that breaks down Tencent’s online gaming financial performance over the past few years.

As you can see, while the 7% quarterly growth is actually a bit lower than the company experienced in Q1, on the whole the company continues to look very strong.

And interestingly, the lower quarterly growth may be a seasonal thing—the weather is nice, and more people are doing things outside. Tencent’s quarterly revenue growth has been highest in the first quarter for two years straight, perhaps because the cold weather is keeping more people indoors. (The Spring Festival holiday, which also falls during the first quarter of each year, also probably produces a big spike in gaming numbers as gamers kill the hours on trains and at home by playing games).
