There’s so much awkwardness to enjoy at the ‘US-China tech summit’

In Seattle last night, a group of US tech executives joined their Chinese counterparts to meet with China’s president Xi Jinping on his first US state visit. The result was this awkward group photo:

Since China has the world’s most censored internet, which blocks some of the sites of the US execs who’ve turned up, there’s always a spooky quality to such gatherings. If Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was feeling miffed about being denied access to China’s billion mobile web users, he wasn’t showing it as he put on a suit. A rare sight.

Zuckerberg once again polished his Mandarin skills and spoke to Xi in Chinese. Looking on is Lu Wei, China’s internet czar, who’s responsible for blocking Facebook.
