“The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) said on Tuesday it fined Google US$177 million for abusing its market dominance in the Android operating system (OS) market,” reported TechCrunch
Details:
- The antitrust regulator reportedly said that Google has barred local companies like Samsung and LG from customizing the Android operating system for smartphones and other smart devices that they produce.
- The ban on modification was the result of Google’s anti-fragmentation agreements with smartphone developers, the KFTC said in a statement.

- The Korean antitrust authority also banned Google from forcing local smartphone makers into signing these agreements. This covers not just mobile products, but smart TVs and smartwatches as well.
- Last month, South Korea passed an “anti-Google bill” that blocked the search engine as well as iPhone maker Apple from imposing their in-app billing systems on developers.
