Telkom Indonesia Launches True Broadband Access

Indonesian telecommunication company Telkom has launched a ‘True Broadband Access’ program to make broadband access available for every home. The program is scheduled to be completed by 2015.

The president director of Telkom Indonesia, Rinaldi Firmansyah, explained: “Until 2015, gradually Telkom will build true broadband infrastructure covering at least 497 cities and counties with a target of 13 million [connected households].”

For this program Telkom will spend nearly US$ 2.5 billion on building broadband infrastructure with a speed of 20 Mbps up to 100 Mbps. The initiative is intended to support the Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development Masterplan (MP3EI) of the Indonesian government. The government hopes that broadband access can help accelerate the growth of every economic sector nationwide.

Previously, the government initiated the Palapa Ring project to connect every Indonesian district to the internet. This new plan furthers the national effort on internet infrastructure. Most telecommunications companies are now also trying to improve their networks, such as Telkomsel and XL. If these development efforts continue, the next few years could see Indonesia become one of the leading IT technology countries in Asia.
