Grab has promoted Philipp Kandal to chief product officer starting from February 1.

In his new role, Kandal will oversee the tech giant’s product, design, and analytics teams. He will also spearhead Grab’s product vision and strategy initiatives.

Kandal joined Grab in 2019 to lead the engineering and data science teams for Geo, the firm’s vertical for location-based intelligence and services. He then became head of Geo in January 2022.

Before Grab, he was senior vice president for engineering at Telenav, a California-headquartered connected car and location-based service firm.

“He is a strong proven executor, and has successfully led several game-changing innovations for Grab, including the development of GrabMaps and initiatives that have made the Grab ecosystem more effective,” said Grab co-founder Tan Hooi Ling in a statement.

Grab launched GrabMaps in June 2022 under Kandal’s leadership. The B2B service has rolled out in all of the firm’s eight markets.

The company said GrabMaps removes the “tens of millions of dollars” in estimated annual third-party mapping fees.
