I’m always surprised by how interconnected the global startup scene is.
On my first night in New York last month, I decided to hit up a bar just around the corner from my hotel in SoHo and made friends with a group of guys. After a couple of rounds, I realized they’re venture capitalists – they actually read this weekly newsletter to keep abreast of the Asian VC industry. And they were also eager to hear my thoughts on the region’s startup ecosystem.
Of course I’d make merry with the only people who can make me talk about work on my time off while I’m halfway across the world.
We discussed emerging trends in Asia and compared them with those in the West, and talked about some of the Asian startups that they’re familiar with. I even managed to convince one of the VCs to join our Tech in Asia Conference, which is happening in Jakarta on September 15 and in Singapore on September 21 and 22 (shout out to my boy, Tony – see you).
