Voice Messaging App TalkBox Sends 10 Million Voice Messages Each Day

Hong Kong-based start-up TalkBox is a mobile app that basically works like Whatsapp or KakaoTalk. But instead of sending text messages, TalkBox sends voice messages.

TalkBox claims to be the world’s first voice-only messaging app introduced in January this year. And since then, it has been a roaring success.

The app has received 10 million downloads so far, out of which 48 percent of them are very active users who send 10 million voice messages each day. In other words, an average active user sends about 60 voice messages each month!

We’re told by Jacqueline Chong, director of marketing, that TalkBox though successful, has a lot of copy cats worldwide — both a compliment and a curse. The team is constantly pushing forward to set itself apart from its clones. It also faces pressure from giant apps like Whatsapp and KakaoTalk who also have voice messaging functions. But Jacqueline says that keeping to just voice messaging for TalkBox makes the app simple and sets them apart from others.

TalkBox is free to download and available in English and Chinese on both iOS and Android. It will also be available to on mobile operating systems, including MeeGo, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Symbian.

Half of its users come from the U.S. and China, while the rest are from other parts of Asia like Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. The team has recently raised a round of investment but didn’t disclose from whom or how much they received.
