In China, there are over 600 censored phrases, words, and other sensitive topics that the government considers important to monitor. I’ve lived in China for over 9 years and i’m still bemused by what’s censored and what’s not – and getting it wrong could cost you dearly, just ask Justin Bieber!
At our startup KAWO, we’ve just released a really cool feature that takes the worry out of all this simply by offering a final stage filter that screens your post content right before you go live to China’s social media populous. The feature screens not just censored language but also censored links which are inaccessible in mainland China.

KAWO Protect your last defense
The pop up will appear just before it goes live and if it contains either language or irrelevant links, the feature will explain why it’s being filtered and encourages you to change it. Your options are to ‘POST ANYWAY’ or ‘EDIT’, which gives you an opportunity to make further changes before posting live.
Our team keeps the listed sensitive words updated by scrolling popular government warning websites and industry news sites (there are plenty) that share what is currently trending. We then upload these sensitive words into our filters on a weekly basis, so you’ll always know we’re on top of it.
So it’s one small step for man kind, one giant leap for foreign brands, celebrities and other figures that wish to remain friendly with this great country.
