7 ways to improve your online business safety

If your business is done over the Internet, you have to take a couple of safety-related issues in consideration: its importance, management and improvement.

When it comes to maintaining and enhancing online business safety, you are faced with all kinds of threats, both from faulty systems and technology, as well as hackers who aim to locate, steal and manipulate your client base and all sensitive information you hold. Therefore, you have to do what you can to ensure maximum safety and protection.

    1. Ecommerce platform you can trust

Having a safe base is vital in online businesses and only with a secure platform for your e-commerce site will you be able to relax and be sure that you are in good hands. Furthermore, a great number of these platforms is open source and can be used by anyone anywhere, disregarding the industry and the amount of work they handle.

The biggest benefit of these platforms is that they can be accessed only internally and are closed to outside attacks. Some of them are even enhanced with additional double authentication.

    2. Avoid keeping sensitive data

While you have to collect sensitive data from your clients by default, you do not necessarily have to store them – particularly the most personal information such as credit card, PIN and social security numbers. An experienced hacker will have a blast with these and your client’s privacy can be considered non-existent.

Since bank information is easy to be stolen and later manipulated, you should not store them but purge old records and keep just the things you absolutely need. The less you store, the smaller the chances of something going wrong are.

    3. Untraceable data

For some pieces of information you need to preserve and keep in your position – you cannot discard absolutely everything just because you do not feel like protecting it – try to make them as inaccessible to attacks as possible. Try encrypting and masking it to look like something else, or you can even move it from one place to another. With a wide range of storing options available today, you can create several untraceable “hiding” places – or you can upload it onto a cloud and manipulate it wherever you are.

    4. Human factor

Yes, most of the Internet-based work is done automatically and online thanks to technological advances, but some human input has to be present, too. Sometimes, these are the weakest links in a safety system as employees tend to make mistakes – unfortunate and unintentional, but still mistakes – and they should be limited. Try to train your staff and educate them how to avoid errors. Let them know how vital information you have are and what the consequences of loosing them will be.
