As the tech winter goes on with (seemingly) no end in sight, there are two bright spots that stand out: AI and climate tech. While AI has been discussed at length, climate tech hasn’t gotten much attention in comparison – but it’s pulling in significant amounts of investments, and within Southeast Asia, there’s immense opportunity for climate tech to succeed and thrive.
However, it’s early days still for climate tech in the region, especially in contrast to markets like the US, Europe, China, and even India.
Climate tech is a complex industry, which begs the question – where to start? It’s a massive conundrum and there are multiple paths toward tackling this tremendous opportunity. This is why the 2023 edition of Tech in Asia’s premier tech summit, SYNC, will be bringing together the region’s top 100 climate tech leaders to learn and troubleshoot, as well as uncover tangible solutions and opportunities.

Organized in partnership with East Ventures, Trirec, Taiwan Mobile, and BCG X, this year’s edition will be held on August 21 at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. As with every SYNC, it will be a closed-door, invite-only affair with a highly curated guest list. This event will guarantee quality learning and networking opportunities through a mix of open and structured interactions.
These include expert roundtable discussions, curated networking sessions, and even site visits to some of Singapore’s most innovative climate tech projects, with a chance to meet and talk with the founders of said projects.
That said, these are just a few of the things we’ve lined up in our program for this year – you can check out this link for more details.
A preview of things to come
As we focus our energy on building the emerging climate tech community amid wintry economic conditions, we would like SYNC to be an avenue of inspiration, innovation, and insight. To this end, we’ve put together the following main-stage discussion topics:
- A Global Approach to the Net-Zero Challenge – Learn from prominent US climate tech leaders, including the managing director of Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy fund, on how they view the global market and opportunities.
- Jonah Goldman – managing director of Breakthrough Energy
- Raju Sarma – managing director and partner of BCG X (moderator)
- The Story of Singapore’s Climate Tech Pioneers – Hear how an enterprising investor-founder duo built Sunseap, Singapore’s leading solar company, and sold it for nearly US$1 billion seven years later.
- Melvyn Yeo – founder and managing partner of Trirec
- Frank Phuan – founder of Sunseap Group
- From VC to EVs: Tackling Indonesia’s Massive Climate Tech Opportunity – Indonesia’s transition to net zero is the 800-pound gorilla for Southeast Asia’s climate tech sector. Meet Pandu, the investor turned executive on the frontlines of this initiative
- Pandu Sjahrir – CEO of Electrum

We’ve also lined up a strong cast of roundtable discussion moderators:
- Grace Sai – co-founder and CEO of Unravel Carbon
- Milena Nikolova – partner of Aera VC
- Alina Truhina – CEO and founding partner of The Radical Fund
- And many more
Don’t miss out
While this event is by invitation only, we know that there are lots of great talents who may not have been on our initial list but could bring plenty to the table. If you or someone you know fits the bill, please apply for an invite.
Hot tip: Early-bird promotions are currently in effect and will end on July 17. And if you’re a founder, reach out to us at sync@techinasia.com to get a US$100 discount.
We’re looking forward to having great discussions and forming valuable connections – hopefully, SYNC 2023 can serve as the genesis of a brighter future. See you there.
