“The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has started an investigation to check whether Google Pay (GPay) has abused its dominance of India’s digital payments market,” Livemint reported, citing executives at three payment firms who have knowledge of the matter.
Details:
- The Indian agency is currently speaking with local payment majors such as PhonePe and Paytm Payments Bank as part of the investigation.
- With its probe, CCI aims to understand if Google is providing other payment options for its users other than GPay. It is also looking into whether the company is abiding by India’s zero-merchant discount rate policy, among others.
Context:
- The CCI ordered the probe into Google’s digital payments offering in November last year, with the investigation beginning last month.
- One of the sources said that CCI’s probe is modeled after the European Union’s GDPR policy, which has been used to determine if data sharing between Google’s multiple offerings gives it an unfair competitive advantage.
