Sources: Facebook’s payments partnership with Gojek affected by delays

“Facebook’s partnership with Indonesian technology startup Gojek has been hit by delays, stalling the US technology company’s expansion into one of the world’s biggest social media markets,” reported the Financial Times, citing sources privy to the matter.

Details:

  • According to one source, Facebook had signaled to Gojek late last year that it was shifting its focus away from Indonesia to concentrate on other markets.
  • Another reason for the delay in the partnership deal is said to be Gojek’s planned merger with Tokopedia. Facebook said, however, that its commitment to bringing payments to Indonesia was “unchanged” and remained proud of its investment in Gojek.

Context:

  • The development comes after Gojek reportedly signed a conditional sales and purchase agreement with Tokopedia related to the merger agreement.
  • Earlier in June 2020, Facebook said it was working with Gojek’s GoPay and other entities to seek regulatory approval to launch mobile payment services in Indonesia.
