Sony sets up strategic department in China, preparing for a PS4 launch?

Consoles may be legal in China now, but as of yet, Chinese gamers haven’t actually gotten a chance to legally buy any of them. But that could soon change, as Sony Computer Entertainment has apparently announced that it is establishing a new strategic department in China. Soeda Takehito has been named the head of the new branch.

While the announcement does not say anything specific about the Playstation 4, there is little chance the Sony’s gaming branch would bother setting up a new strategic branch in China if it was not planning on offering its flagship product there. And the appointment of Soeda Takehito, a former GREE China executive and a China-born Japanese citizen who even attended Peking University, shows that Sony is taking its new China operation quite seriously.

Of course, this doesn’t mean a PS4 launch in China is right around the corner. Moreover, the fact that consoles are now legal in China does not negate the many problems with trying to sell a console there. Several Chinese companies have already announced their own consoles, but whether gamers will bite is another question entirely, and one that Sony may need some time to research before anything gets officially launched in the Middle Kingdom.

Chinese gamers are still excited about the prospect, though. On a Netease Games story about the new branch, the most popular comment is about how excited some are to have official Playstation Network servers in China for easier (and less laggy) multiplayer gaming.
