Gojek, Gogoro to build EV battery stations in Indonesia

Indonesian decacorn Gojek has announced a partnership with Gogoro, a Taiwan-based battery station maker, to pilot a battery swap scheme for electric vehicles (EVs) in Jakarta. Pertamina, a state-owned energy company that operates gas stations across Indonesia, is also involved in the partnership.

In the pilot test, Gojek and Gogoro will build four battery swapping posts called GoStation in Pertamina locations. Both companies will also deploy 250 Gogoro Smartscooters in Jakarta, which they will scale up to 5,000 vehicles in the future.

On top of the partnership, GoTo Group – the parent company of Gojek after its merger with Tokopedia – has also backed Gogoro’s private investment in public equity deal as part of the Taiwan-based firm’s initial public offering process. In September, Gogoro announced a US$2.4 billion merger with Poema Global, a special purpose acquisition company.

Founded in 2011, Gogoro has produced EVs that have been used by more than 400,000 riders, and it has also built 2,100 battery swapping stations in Taiwan. The company currently facilitates around 270,000 battery swaps every day.

According to a statement, the partnership will also help Gojek’s ongoing effort to reduce its carbon footprint, aiming to achieve zero emissions by 2030.
