Selecting a niche is the first step you take after you’ve decided to start an ecommerce business. It doesn’t matter what specific type of ecommerce you’re venturing into, you just can’t move further with your enterprise until you set your mind on a certain niche.

Exploring your interests

When we launched our first store back in May 2015 (we chose a drop shipping model), we had a very vague understanding of the business specifics. We didn’t know what aspects to consider and, frankly speaking, we were mostly going with our intuition. It was only later that we developed and tested our own algorithm for rating niches.

So, what did we do at the very first stage? We thought of things we are passionate about. We all have our hobbies and favorite activities, so we started with creating a list of these things.

I highly recommend you doing the same for a couple of reasons:

  • When you’re passionate about something, you are really knowledgeable on that subject. You can easily evaluate and pick the best items for your store, become aware of market trends, and adapt to changing market conditions. It means that your knowledge of the niche is the key to creating a favorable and appealing atmosphere in your store. Also, when you know a lot about the products you’re selling, you will find it much easier to professionally deal with your clients’ queries. Don’t forget that top-quality customer support is crucial for your store’s performance.
  • You’re highly motivated to keep going. At the first stages of launching your ecommerce store, you really spend quite a long time trying to figure out how everything works. You’re likely to deal with some challenges, but if you’re interested in what you’re doing, none of the business troubles will stop you from running your very own venture. It’s also worth noting that this business will inevitably become an important part of your life. Will you be able to devote your time and energy to something if you are not really enthusiastic about it?

Analyzing the market

So, you’ve created a list of topics you’re passionate about. Great! That’s a wonderful starting point.

But obviously, not all of your hobbies and interests can make a proper niche for a commercially successful store. That’s why you need to take all the ideas you’ve generated and check if:

  • You will find a sufficient amount of items for your store
  • You will have enough customers interested in your products
  • You will get solid profits from selling these items
  • You will be able to promote your business efficiently

Each of these is an integral part of the commercial success for your venture. Therefore, you need to take your time to evaluate your niche according to these parameters.

How can you do that?

Research supply

Let’s suppose you have a really specific hobby. You know everything about it and are really motivated to give it a try. Will you be able to source enough items related to this niche?

When we decided to drop ship from AliExpress, it became quite easy for us to evaluate the potential of a niche from the point of view of supply. As of today, we are looking for niches where we can find 500+ items that:
