Thanks to the folks over at Daily Social for the heads up on Skype’s new agreement with Indonesian telco Telkomsel. The mobile operator is said to have about 100 million subscribers, which certainly makes it an attractive market for a company like Skype.
According to Skype’s blog post on the matter, the service will be made available on 24 Telkomsel smartphones for starters, but expanding to more handsets later on. If you’re a subscriber to a Telkomsel data package, then you can get free Skype-to-Skype calls, free messaging, as well as Skype-to-landline (not free), and conference calls.
For Telkomsel, this year has seen 14 percent of its revenue in Q1 come from data services. If customers take advantage of the Skype offerings, then this will certainly continue to increase.
As for Skype, given the growth of the internet in Asia, particularly on mobile, the company, recently acquired by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), is poised for a solid future in the region. Indonesia in particular has 40 percent year-on-year growth for 3G subscribers.
