Singapore General Election: 44,000 Social Media Updates in April

Gelly Cartoon balloon 4As voting day draws closer, the buzz has also gotten louder. Social analytics firm Brandtology and digital agency Tribal DDB revealed that there were 44,000 blog posts, tweets and Facebook updates in the first 26 days of April.

It was a 60 percent jump in the number of social media updates as compared to March’s statistics at 27,000.

Out of the 44,000 social media updates, 66 percent belong to the People’s Action Party (PAP) while 14 percent belong to the Worker’s Party (WP).

The statistics also revealed that almost half of the PAP related updates are positive.

Despite lower buzz volume, WP did pretty well with 6 out of 10 updates classified as positive updates:

The study also revealed that online users appeared to like Mr Chiam See Tong’s Singapore People’s Party best. There were 940 social media updates with 75 percent of them classified as positive.

However, note that Nicole Seah from the National Solidarity Party (NSP) was only introduced on April 19. In other words, only eight days of the “Nicole Seah buzz” was captured. The data would probably have a significant change in the next couple of weeks if more of Seah’s data were included. Seah has inspired quite a huge volume of Google searches and social media comments both on Facebook and Twitter. Her fans has even designed a ‘Nicole Seah’ iPhone theme.
