Singapore Power rolls out global startup accelerator with 7 other utility companies

Singapore Power (SP) has rolled out a global accelerator program to support startups developing solutions in areas such as clean energy, energy efficiency and mobility, digitization, and on-demand customer services.

SP initiated Free Electrons with seven other international utilities – Australia’s AusNet Services and Origin Energy, Tokyo Electric Power Company, ESB (Electricity Supply Board) of Ireland, EDP (Energias de Portugal), Germany’s Innogy, and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. These companies and institutions have 73 million customers in more than 40 countries and a combined net income of US$148 billion.

Twelve startups will be selected to participate in the six-month-long program, and will potentially test their products and services on the massive customer base of all eight utility providers. The program consists of “customer adoption” modules in Singapore, Lisbon, and Dublin, as well as Silicon Valley.

“Together we can develop transformational energy solutions to provide customers with more choices, and help them to save energy and cost,” May Liew, SP director of strategic development, said in a statement.

Energy startups from Singapore and around the world may apply to Free Electrons from today until February 28. The names of selected startups will be announced in April.

The program is supported by two Silicon Valley accelerator partners with extensive networks – New Energy Nexus and Swissnex.
