Today will be a hard day to forget for many of us, as people woke up to be shocked by the news that Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of Apple, had passed away the night before. The news overwhelmed all other headlines around the globe, including here in Asia.

Chinese people were among the first waking up to the astonishing news, and are deeply saddened. On Sina Weibo alone, over 35 million messages have been posted about Steve Jobs as I write this. People are paying their tributes to a brilliant, inspiring leader in the technology world.
Sina Weibo has found its own special way to express its respect. Today when you send microblog messages via your Weibo client on iOS devices, the signature under your messages will read Sent from Jobs’ iPad/iPhone (pictured right), instead of the usual Sent from my iPad/iPhone. Fans of Apple and Steve Jobs are sticking to their iOS devices, reading about the passing of the man who invented them.
My colleague went down to the Beijing Apple Store in Sanlitun this afternoon, and saw dozens of people laying out an impromptu “iVigil” – to use the Twitter term – of flowers, notes, and candles. It’s a spontaneous phenomenon happening at many of the company’s stores around the world.
In memory of Steve Jobs, one of the most ingenious and inspiring souls the world has ever seen. R.I.P., Steve.
