Update: Guyi Shen (I call him lobang king) told me that his LobangClub App has received about 2,000 downloads just on Wednesday alone. He isn’t ready to reveal the full download stats, yet.
The LobangClub App, which we recently reviewed, is a useful app that scans product barcodes and compares prices in Singapore. It is a good app for folks who’re price sensitive but at the same time don’t want to waste time hopping from shop to shop just to save that couple of cents or dollars.
We just learned from Guyi Shen, co-founder of the start-up, that his app has hit the number one spot on iTunes Singapore in the lifestyle category. As you can see, LobangClub has surpassed other popular apps in Singapore including Groupon, Deal.com.sg, and Summon Auntie. It is also ranked 21 in the free app category, ahead of apps like Instagram and Viber.
So what’s the secret to getting the app on Apple’s list? Surely, it’s got to be high-quality. Besides that, Guyi says that getting tons of downloads in a short span of time seems to be how it’s done. We did ask him how many downloads were recorded so far but unfortunately some issues with iTunes have prevented him from checking the stats. But he estimated there were probably around 1,000 downloads yesterday alone.
On a related note, at the recent Founders Drinks, Sanjay from Replaid, creator of the Summon Auntie app revealed at the panel that his app has been downloaded over 200,000 times in its first month since launch. That’s pretty remarkable for a Singaporean app.
