In brief: China’s TikTok banks $11m in overseas revenue during Q1 2019

  • The overseas operations of Chinese short-video app TikTok generated US$11 million in revenue during the first quarter of this year: a 135% increase compared to the same period last year, Sensor Tower reports.
  • The app, known as Douyin in mainland China, made most of its revenue from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany, with the US alone contributing 66% of TikTok’s total revenue outside of China.
  • TikTok was temporarily banned for download in India earlier this year, although the ban was lifted after TikTok won an Indian state court appeal.
