Like many forms of entertainment, mobile games generally oughtn’t be imitated in real life. Flinging birds at pigs, for example, is sure to anger the folks at PETA (and yes, probably the birds too). Likewise, jumping out of a five-story building with an umbrella to imitate a parachuting mobile game isn’t a great idea. But that’s exactly what one Shanghai boy did yesterday.
The Hongqiao-area boy — whose name and age were not disclosed — miraculously was totally unhurt. This is not because parachuting with an umbrella is effective; rather, he bounced off a rain canopy and other building protrusions on the way down, slowing his fall. When a second-floor neighbor looked out the window and saw the kid on top of a fence, where he had landed, he asked which apartment the kid lived in and whether or not he had falled out of the building. The boy, lively as ever, said “I’m not telling you!”
The boy was taken to the hospital, but as he was uninjured, he was later released and is back with his mother. The mother told local community leaders that her son was probably imitating a mobile parachuting game that he’d been playing nonstop recently on her phone.
As a child, I once climbed a tree and jumped out of it with a trash bag in the hopes of parachuting to safety, so it’s hard for me to criticize this kid for being dumb without hurting my own self-esteem. Plus, we don’t know how old he was. What I will say is that if your child seems obsessed with a particular mobile game, you should probably take a second to assess how that game would play out if your child ever thought to play it in real life.
