DiabetOmics has a painless test for blood sugar, and it just raised $4 million

Medical diagnostics company DiabetOmics has just raised US$4 million in series C funding led by Ventureeast.

DiabetOmics has a patented, non-invasive, saliva-based glucose monitoring test for diabetes patients. It has also developed early detection tests for gestational diabetes (in pregnant women) and high blood pressure in pregnant women.

The new investment will be used to set up a manufacturing facility in India and get regulatory approvals in the US, EU and emerging markets, says an announcement on the funding.

The company derives its name from proteomics – a simultaneous analysis of all the proteins in an organic sample such as saliva or blood. Traditionally, biologists have only been able to track a few proteins at a time. But new technologies like mass spectrometry have enabled the study of proteomes, which are a combination of multiple proteins. DiabetOmics uses proteomics to develop non-invasive tests for detecting and monitoring various forms of diabetes.

India has 67 million diabetics, second only to China’s 96 million, according to the International Diabetes Federation. Part of the reason for the rising incidence of diabetes is lack of awareness and monitoring. DiabetOmics aims to make a difference by developing new tests.
